Recent studies done in the United States show that black and latino residents are being hit particularly hard by COVID-19.
While vital information in the community is being disseminated throughout Stuttgart, there was a lack of communicating that information to the Spanish-speaking community.
Adriana Castillo, of Stuttgart, created Stuttgart Latinos, a Facebook group with over 100 members back in November of 2019.
“I created this group to keep our Latino community informed about local events, news, announcements or sells in Spanish,” said Castillo.
Castillo says the Facebook group is very important to have during this crisis so she can translate in Spanish, city information related to COVID-19.
“I think that the information in our Spanish speaking population has not been provided effectively,” said Castillo. “However, this is an improvement and an opportunity to change that.”
Realizing the need to better serve the Spanish speaking community, city council member, Norma Strabala, has made herself available saying the city knows it is very important to make sure they are notified.
“Mrs. Strabala who is part of the city council wanted to make sure that we are informed and that if someone is in need of food, to please reach out to her,” said Castillo.
Castillo says she shares information from KATV, Univision Arkansas and local community Facebook pages like In The Loop Stuttgart and the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce page to the group.
Castillo said after the first COVID-19 case was confirmed positive in Arkansas County, she knew the purpose of her group was to keep them informed more than ever before.
“If you have any Spanish speaking friends in this area help us add them to the group,” said Castillo.
